Alfaretta Lucretia Noyes : diary of a schoolgirl in Concord, Massachusetts : diaries, 1862 Sept. 15-1863 Feb 26.

Diary written by Alfie Noyes (age thirteen/fourteen, 1862-1863) while attending Factory Village district school in West Concord. Contains a brief record of weekday activities, lessons (dialogue, writing book, decimal fractions, partial payments, and geography), and games/recreation (snap the whip, swinging, and ice skating). Refers to the weather (conditions often dictating activities), Sabbath School, various friends and teachers, and holidays. Also mentions Mr. Alcott (Amos Bronson Alcott, 1799-1888; Superintendent of Schools at the time the diary was written) visiting the school to talk (review studies) with the students. School children performed in public each March at exhibitions, and preparations for Alfie's part of the 1863 exhibition are included.

Alfaretta (Alfie) Lucretia Noyes, daughter of Moses K. and Mary W. Noyes and twin sister of Juniata G. Noyes was born in Saxonville, Framingham, Mass., Dec. 5, 1848. The family moved to West Concord, Mass., where Alfie later attended the district school and resided until her marriage to Oliver H. Godfrey. Her married life was spent in Hampton, N.H. where three children were born: Henry, 1876; Chester, 1878; and Gratia, 1886. Alfaretta Noyes Godfrey died Jan. 13, 1942. From the descri...
